My Life

My Philosophy

My coaching philosophy has always been simple: golf is best learned from the green back to the tee. I also believe in practicing like you play and playing like you practice.

Experience

Experience has taught me that students get better at playing by playing competitive golf at any level, and the person with the best putting average wins most frequently.

My love of golf began at the age of 12 when I first picked up the game. After a successful amateur career, I turned professional at the age of 18 and competed on a number of professional tours, holding European Tour status for most of my playing career. After posting a number of top ten finishes around the world, I achieved my first tour victory at the 1988 Torras Hostench Barcelona Open where I was able to outduel British Open Champion and world number one Sir Nick Faldo on the fourth hole of sudden death play-off.

In 1992 I retired from touring and transitioned into coaching. I was the European Director of Instruction at David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Europe and then the Director of Golf at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Before this I coached the University of Cambridge’s Men’s Golf Team from 1995 to 1996.

I have  worked with a large number of top professional, amateur, and junior players through-out my coaching career. One of my proudest achievements to date include coaching three USGA champions in 2010: Paula Creamer (U.S. Women’s Open Champion), Peter Uihlein (U.S. Amateur Champion), and Doris Chen (U.S. Girls’ Champion).
